LegCo Panel on Security visits Stanley Prison

Several members of the Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Security visited Stanley Prison today (November 25) to gain a better understanding of the operation of the correctional institution. The Commissioner of Correctional Services, Mr Sin Yat-kin, accompanied them during the visit.

Nine LegCo members, mostly members of the Panel on Security, including the Panel Chairman, Mr Ip Kwok-him, first met with Mr Sin and staff of various levels of the management to understand the scope of work and project highlights of the department. They also exchanged views on the work of correctional services.

The members then toured the facilities of Stanley Prison, including the Control Room, the complex for detaining serious offenders, the institution hospital, the Special Unit for accommodating inmates who have violated disciplinary rules or require segregation arrangements, the printing and shoe-making workshops and the computer study room.

The members also visited the kitchen of the institution to learn more about the meal arrangements for persons in custody. They took the chance to taste food from the four main dietary scales after the briefings by correctional staff. All dietary scales for persons in custody are designed according to the views of the Department of Health and a qualified dietician.

In one of the cell blocks, the members had the chance to view the contrast between the old and existing cells.

The Panel Chairman, Mr Ip, said at the end of the visit that the LegCo members had deepened their understanding of the basic operation of the correctional institution through today's visit. He added that the department has all along fulfilled its responsibilities to ensure the security of persons in custody and contributes a lot of effort to rehabilitation work to facilitate their reintegration into society after release.
