LegCo Member Tang Ka-piu visits Tong Fuk Correctional Institution

Legislative Council Member Mr Tang Ka-piu, accompanied by Yuen Long District Council member, Mr Luk Chung-hung, Tuen Mun District Council member, Mr Leo Chan Manwell and eight other persons, visited Tong Fuk Correctional Institution in Lantau today (December 31) to gain a better understanding of vocational training provided by the Correctional Services Department and the development of rehabilitative services.

The Assistant Commissioner (Rehabilitation), Mr Woo Ying-ming, joined them during the visit.

The 11 guests first paid a visit to the computer study room, where they were briefed on the management and operation of computer-related vocational training courses conducted in correctional facilities. They then visited the Timber Formwork Skill Workshop to learn more about the course, which was newly introduced to the institution this year. An instructor of the Construction Industry Council gave a briefing on the course contents and trainees demonstrated timber formwork skills.

The guests also visited the Food and Beverage Training Block to learn more about the food and beverage training provided to persons in custody. The visitors shared valuable views on the service and food provided by the trainees.

Mr Tang said at the end of the visit that he had gained a deeper understanding of the vocational training provided by the department through today's visit. He added that rehabilitative services are on the right track and facilitate the smooth reintegration of persons in custody into society upon release.

He also complimented the department for demonstrating its understanding of the employment market through initiating different market-oriented vocational training courses for persons in custody. The arrangements not only help to resolve the manpower shortage problem in the market, but also enable rehabilitated persons to find a stable job so as to build a safer and more inclusive society.
