Correctional officers stop remand person in custody from self-harm

Correctional Services officers stopped a remand person in custody from hurting herself in Lai King Correctional Institution today (January 7).

At about 8.20am, the 20-year-old female remand person in custody cut her left wrist with a comb in her dormitory. Officers at the scene stopped her immediately and arranged for her to receive medical treatment at centre hospital. A departmental clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The person in custody was remanded for offences of possession of dangerous drugs and obtaining property by deception.
