Correctional officers stop person in custody from self-harm

Correctional Services officers stopped a person in custody from hurting himself in Lai Chi Rehabilitation Centre yesterday (January 10).

At about 9.05pm, the 14-year-old male person in custody turned emotional suddenly and banged his forehead against the wall in the centre hospital ward. Officers at the scene stopped him immediately and arranged for medical treatment in the centre hospital.

After preliminary examination and treatment, he was transferred to a public hospital for further observation. He was treated and discharged, and returned to the centre. A departmental clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The person in custody was sentenced to the rehabilitation centre for an offence of indecent conduct towards child under 16.
