Correctional officers assaulted by person in custody in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre

Two correctional officers were assaulted and injured by a person in custody in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre yesterday (September 21).

The 27-year-old male person in custody turned emotional during a visit by a friend and broke a handset at the visit room at 4.20pm. An officer at scene immediately went forward to stop him but was attacked by the person in custody with fists. Other officers called for reinforcement at once and jointly subdued the man.

Reinforcement staff then escorted the person in custody to the interview room for enquiry, during which he turned emotional again and attacked an officer with his fist. Officers at scene tried to stop him but in vain. Therefore they had to use OC foam to subdue him after several warnings.

The person in custody and two officers who were injured were sent to the centre hospital for treatment. The person in custody suffered injury on his fingers and need not to be transferred to other hospital. The two officers who suffered injuries on face and eye respectively were transferred to a public hospital for further examination.

Correctional Services Department has reported the case to the Police for investigation.

The person in custody was sentenced to imprisonment for offences of theft and assault.
