Correctional officers stop hanging attempt by remand person in custody

Correctional officers stopped a male remand person in custody attempting to hang himself in Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre yesterday evening (December 7).

At 10.07pm, an officer found the 16-year-old remand person in custody attempting to hang himself with a bed sheet tied onto the grill bars inside his cell. The officer immediately stopped him and called for reinforcements.

Upon arrival, the reinforced staff immediately entered the cell and sent him to the centre hospital for medical examination and observation. He was conscious at the time with a faint minor red mark found on his neck. He was subsequently transferred to a public hospital for further examination and treatment.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The person in custody was remanded for the offence of attempting to cause explosion with intent.
