Correctional officers stop person in custody from hanging attempt

Correctional officers stopped a male person in custody who attempted to hang himself in Pik Uk Prison yesterday (December 25).

At 9.38pm, the 23-year-old person in custody was found attempting to hang himself by tying a loop made with a piece of towel onto the window grille bar inside the toilet of his dormitory. The officer immediately called for reinforcements.

Upon arrival, the reinforcing staff immediately took the person in custody to the centre hospital for medical examination. He was conscious at the time and subsequently referred to public hospital for further treatment and observation. A clinical psychologist of the department will follow up on the case.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The person in custody was sentenced to imprisonment for the offence of unlawfully remaining in Hong Kong with employment.
