Remand person in custody attacks correctional staff at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre

A 32-year-old male remand person in custody attacked a correctional officer at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre yesterday (July 12).

At 3.37pm, the remand person in custody quarrelled with another male remand person in custody inside a hospital ward of the centre. Staff at the scene separated them at once and escorted the person in custody away from the scene. On the way, he suddenly became emotional and attacked a correctional officer. The staff at the scene immediately stopped him and OC foam was used to subdue the person in custody after warnings were given in vain.

Two correctional officers and the assailant sustained injuries. After examination and treatment provided by the medical officer at the centre hospital, one of the correctional officers was referred to a public hospital for further treatment. The assailant was also sent to a public hospital for further examination because of his unstable emotions.

The Correctional Services Department has referred the incident to the Police for investigation.

The person in custody has a history of drug abuse and was remanded for the offence of theft.
