Remand person in custody dies in public hospital after being found unconscious

     A 44-year-old male remand person in custody at Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre (SLPC) was found unconscious in his cell today (October 13) and died in a public hospital.

     The person in custody was remanded at SLPC for the offence of wounding on October 4, 2017. He suffered from schizophrenia and multiple chronic illnesses, and required continuous medical care and follow-up after admission. At 7.04am today, the correctional officers entered his cell for routine checking and found him unconscious. The officers immediately applied first aid treatment and called an ambulance to send him to a public hospital for further treatment. He was subsequently certified dead at 8.05am.

     The case has been reported to the Police. A death inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.
