Inmates rescued from suicide attempts

Two inmates who attempted suicide were found and rescued respectively at 7am today (November 20) in a cell at Stanley Prison and shortly after 8am yesterday in a cell at Tai Lam Centre for Women (TLCW) by Correctional Services Department (CSD) staff.

The Stanley Prison inmate, surnamed Lam, was found hanging with a piece of bed sheet tied to the grille of his cell. The TLCW remand prisoner, surnamed Wong, tried to hang herself with a pair of uniform trousers from the gate bars. Both were immediately lowered and given first-aid treatment by CSD staff.

The 29-year-old Stanley Prison inmate, found conscious, was sent by ambulance from Stanley Prison to the Queen Mary Hospital for further treatment.

Lam, was convicted of trafficking in a dangerous drug and sentenced to imprisonment for 14 years and eight months. He was admitted to Stanley Prison in July, 2003.

Wong, aged 50, is being treated and is under observation at TLCW. She was admitted to TLCW for the offence of theft on November 16.
