Correctional officers successfully stop inmate attempting self-harm

Officers of the Correctional Services Department (CSD) detected and prevented a male inmate from harming himself further with a ball pen and attempting to bang his head onto a wall in Cape Collinson Correctional Institution (CCCI) at around 10.30pm yesterday (June 12).

The inmate was then sent to the institution hospital for examination and treatment. He was conscious and sustained external injury on his neck, left wrist and chest. He will be attended by the department's clinical psychologist for psychological assessment.

A spokesperson for the CSD said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicides or self-harm. The measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid service."

The 21-year-old inmate was admitted to CCCI in March this year.
