Correctional officers stop inmate attempting self-harm

Officers of the Correctional Services Department (CSD) detected and prevented a male inmate from harming himself further with a touch knife on his left wrist in Tai Lam Correctional Institution (TLCI)'s bookbinding workshop at around noon yesterday (August 29).

The inmate was then sent to the institution's hospital for examination and treatment. He was conscious and sustained external injury on his left wrist. He will be attended by the department's clinical psychologist for psychological assessment.

A spokesperson for the CSD said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicides or self-harm. The measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid service."

The 31-year-old inmate was admitted to TLCI in June this year. With a history of drug addiction, he claimed to have heard voices inside his head calling for his self-harm behaviour.
