Correctional officer stops inmate attempting self harm

    

     A patrolling officer of the Correctional Services Department detected and prevented an inmate from harming himself further with a sharpened toothbrush in Pik Uk Correctional Institution yesterday (March 27).

     At about 6.30pm yesterday, a patrolling officer found a 21-year-old inmate holding a sharpened toothbrush and with red marks on his left wrist. He was immediately stopped and escorted to the Centre Hospital for medical treatment. He will be attended to by the department's clinical psychologist for assessment.

     The 21-year-old inmate was admitted to Pik Uk Correctional Institution on March 26 for breach of Supervision Order under the Training Centres Ordinance.

     A spokesperson for the department said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. The measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."
