Correctional staff stop person in custody attempting self-harm

    

     Officers of the Correctional Services Department discovered and stopped a person in custody attempting self-harm at Lai Sun Correctional Institution (LSCI) today (July 19).

     The male person in custody, aged 20, tried to harm his wrist with a paint scraper and sustained minor injury.

     Immediate medical treatment was given to him at the centre hospital. Further psychiatric assessment will be arranged for him.

     A CSD spokesperson said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. The measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

     The male person in custody was sent to LSCI this year to undergo drug treatment for breach of a probation order.
