Correctional staff stop inmate on remand attempting self-harm

Officers of the Correctional Services Department stopped an inmate on remand from further attempting self-harm at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (September 19).

At about 11.30am, the 45-year-old male remand inmate suddenly turned emotional and banged his forehead against hard object during visit. The onsite officer stopped him immediately. The inmate sustained injury to his forehead and was in conscious condition.

The officers immediately took him to the centre hospital for initial treatment, from where he was transferred to a government hospital for further observation and treatment. Arrangements will be made for him to see clinical psychologists for further assessment and counselling.

A spokesman for the department said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The inmate was remanded to the centre for an offence of handling stolen goods.
