Correctional officers stop remand inmate from suicide attempt

     Officers of the Correctional Services Department stopped a remand inmate from attempting to commit suicide at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre this morning (November 17).

      The officer, while patrolling the cells at about 12.30am this morning, found the 36-year-old male remand inmate attempting to hang himself with a bed sheet which was tied onto the grille bars of the cell. The officer stopped him immediately and called for reinforcement. The inmate was found conscious when being rescued.?He was taken to the centre's hospital for medical examination and treatment, and was later sent to Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre for further assessment.

      A spokesman for the department said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

      The inmate was remanded in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre for offences of possession of offensive weapon in a public place and theft.
