Shek Pik Prison inmates receive academic certificates

     One hundred and eight inmates of Shek Pik Prison (SSP) were presented with certificates at a ceremony today (November 28) in recognition of their academic achievements.

      In 2012, a total of 260 inmates at Shek Pik Prison obtained 392 certificates in various academic courses and public examinations organised by the Open University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority, City and Guilds International and the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) International Qualifications.

      The examinations passed covered a variety of subjects such as languages, mathematics, liberal studies, ethics and religious studies, visual arts, business finance, business statistics, business administration, software applications, accounting and bookkeeping.

      Of the 108 inmates who received certificates, one inmate was awarded a Bachelor Degree of Chinese Language and Literature by the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) and another was awarded an Associate Degree of General Studies by the OUHK.

      The 108 inmates awarded certificates today had passed 171 papers, and achieved 70 distinctions and credits and a total of 305 university credit points.

      "It is encouraging to witness the academic achievements of the inmates who had overcome many difficulties in reaching their goals. Their good results in public examinations can help lay a good foundation for future opportunities," the Acting Chairman of the Po Leung Kuk and Chairman of the Sham Shui Po District Fight Crime Committee, Dr Cheng Kam-chung, said when presenting certificates to the inmates.
    
      "The Correctional Services Department provides a great variety of rehabilitation programmes for the community to help the inmates to turn over a new leaf and to reintegrate into society, and this coincides with the aims of the Po Leung Kuk of caring, empowering and providing quality services to the community," he added.
     
      Also attending the ceremony were the Commissioner of Correctional Services, Mr Sin Yat-kin, representatives of community organisations, celebrities and families of the inmates.
     
      Situated at 47 Shek Pik Reservoir Road, Lantau Island, SPP, a maximum security institution, has a capacity of 426 penal places for male adult prisoners.
