Correctional staff stop inmate attempting self-harm

Officers of the Correctional Services Department stopped an inmate attempting self-harm at Pik Uk Prison this morning (December 14).

At around 10.50am today, correctional officers found the 41-year-old male inmate suddenly emotionally unstable, throwing objects out of his cell and banging his head against the iron cell gate. The officers stopped him immediately to prevent his further self-harm. He was conscious at the time and only sustained minor injuries. He was treated at the centre hospital and subsequently transferred to Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre for assessment.

A spokesman for the department said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The man was sentenced to jail for the offence of theft in May this year.
