Correctional officers intercept smuggling of suspected dangerous drugs into reception centre

Correctional officers seized suspected dangerous drugs from a remand inmate at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre yesterday (April 25).

The 32-year-old male remand inmate underwent X-ray body scanning on his admission to the centre yesterday and was suspected to have swallowed dangerous drugs. Until around 7pm yesterday, he had discharged a total of three rod-shaped pellets of suspected dangerous drugs wrapped in plastic, measuring about 2cm and 6cm each with a total weight of 43.5 grams.

The case was reported to the Police.

The inmate was remanded for the offence of trafficking in a dangerous drug.

A spokesperson for the department said, "The department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs or unauthorised articles into correctional institutions in order to maintain good order and discipline in a drug-free environment for all people in its custody."

There have been 38 seizures of dangerous drugs to date this year. Most of the seizures were made in reception centres.
