Correctional officers rescue inmate from hanging attempt

     Correctional officers rescued an inmate who attempted to hang herself in Lo Wu Correctional Institution yesterday (April 27).

      At about 11.10pm, the 35-year-old female inmate was found trying to hang herself by tying a loop made with bed sheet onto the grill gate inside the hospital ward. The officer immediately stopped her.

      The inmate was conscious at the time. After examination by medical staff, she was transferred to a public hospital for further treatment. A clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.

      A spokesman for the department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

      The inmate was sentenced to imprisonment for 32 months and 14 days for offences of theft and destroying /damaging others' property.
