Correctional officers intercept smuggling of suspected dangerous drugs into reception centre

     Correctional officers seized suspected dangerous drugs from a male remand inmate at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (August 2).

      The 48-year-old male remand inmate underwent X-ray body scanning on his admission to the centre on August 1 and was suspected to have swallowed dangerous drugs. At about 11.40am today, he was found to have discharged a total of six small packs of suspected dangerous drugs wrapped in plastic sheet. The inmate was remanded for the offence of trafficking in dangerous drugs.

      The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

      A spokesperson for the department said, "The department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs or unauthorised articles into correctional institutions in order to maintain good order and discipline in a drug-free environment for all people in its custody."

      There have been 57 seizures of dangerous drugs to date this year. Most of the seizures were made in reception centres.
