CSD officers stop remand inmates attack incident

A number of male remand inmates attacked and injured another male remand inmate at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (August 12). Correctional officers were also injured during the incident.

At about 2.37pm, a 37-year-old male remand inmate suddenly attacked the head and face of a 44-year-old male remand inmate in the dayroom with fists. The officers on the scene stopped him immediately. During the assault, more than 10 male remand inmates jointly attempted to attack the victim. Officers immediately called for reinforcement.

Upon arrival, the reinforced staff tried to separate the group but in vain. Despite repeated orders to stop, the attackers took no heed of the orders of the staff.  For the sake of safety of the victim, the officers had then applied the OC foam. During the incident, an officer was attacked by one of the male remand inmate and sustained face injuries. Besides, a total of seven other officers also sustained injuries when stopping the attackers.

After the incident was under control, a total of 15 male remand inmates and eight officers were sent to the centre hospital for medical treatment. All male remand inmates were treated, and five injured officers were transferred to public hospital for further examination.  They were discharged after treatment.

The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

The first attacker had been remanded for an offence of trafficking in dangerous drugs, while the victim had been remanded for an offence of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
