Correctional officers stop remand inmate attempting self-harm

Correctional Services officers prevented a remand inmate from hurting himself in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (August 15).

At about 4pm, the 50-year-old male remand inmate suddenly turned emotional when he was meeting a correctional officer in the centre hospital. He attempted to hit his head against a cabinet. Officers at the scene immediately stopped him but encountered serious resistance. The officers subsequently used OC foam to prevent him from further hurting himself.

The remand inmate sustained no injury and is currently under observation at the centre hospital. He will be referred to a departmental clinical psychologist for further assessment.

The inmate was remanded for an offence of assaulting a police officer.
