Correctional officers stop inmate from self-harm

Correctional Services officers stopped a female inmate from hurting herself at Nei Kwu Correctional Institution yesterday (October 3).

At about 2.52pm, the 41-year-old inmate suddenly turned emotional when interviewed by correctional officers and hit her head against the cell gate. Officers at the scene immediately stopped her from further hurting herself.

The inmate sustained minor injury to her forehead and was treated by the medical officer. A departmental clinical psychologist will follow-up the case.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The inmate was recalled to the centre for further treatment after breaching the requirements of the supervision order.
