The Department requires a staff who is well trained, well motivated and well disciplined. Only suitably qualified persons with motivation in pursuing a career in correctional services will be selected.

The Department provides comprehensive training in the most up-to-date operational and management techniques for all new recruits to acquire the professional competence necessary for discharging their duties. The Department provides opportunities for those who are qualified or those who have shown the aptitude and have subsequently been trained to specialise in certain types of duties, such as aftercare, welfare, nursing, psychological service, physical education, escort, etc.

During their career with CSD, officers will be assisted to develop their career through continuous training, posting and performance appraisal system. Career prospects are good for aspiring and dedicated officers who have passed the qualifying departmental examination.
