Correctional officers stop a person in custody attempting self-harm

     Correctional Officers stopped a male person in custody attempting self-harm at Cape Collinson Correctional Institution today (March 31).

     At about 8.53am, the 18-year-old male person in custody was found drinking a small quantity of diluted cleaning solvent while performing cleaning duties in a workshop. The officer immediately stopped him and sent him to the centre hospital for preliminary treatment.

     The person in custody was conscious at the time and was later transferred to a public hospital for further observation and treatment. He is in stable condition. A clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.

     A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

     The person in custody was sentenced to imprisonment for the offence of wounding with intent.
