Inmates' band strikes right chord

The Cape Collinson Correctional Institution Marching Band comprised of young inmates currently has about 40 members - pipers, drummers and brass players. Most band members start with no music background whatsoever. With intensive training, they are generally able to join outside performances after six to seven months.

The officers who help lead the band have had no formal music training, either. They learn from their predecessors, then pass this on to their young charges. Through the training process, the officers share their experience with the inmates, helping them rebuild their family relationships and find direction in their lives.

A video and a feature story on news.gov.hk today (January 29) spotlight marching band members and the officers who taught them all about harmony.
