Correctional officers stop inmate attempting suicide

Officers of the Correctional Services Department prevented an inmate from attempting to hang himself with a bed sheet in Pak Sha Wan Correctional Institution yesterday (April 12).

The 56-year-old man was found hanging a loop on the grille bar of the entrance gate at his cell. He was immediately stopped.

He was conscious and subsequently transferred to the centre's hospital for treatment. Further arrangements will be made for him to attend psychiatric assessment and treatment.

A spokesperson for the department said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. The measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The inmate was serving a sentence on a charge of managing a vice establishment this year.
