Correctional officers stop inmate attempting self-harm

Correctional Services officers stopped a female inmate hurting herself in Lai King Correctional Institution today (November 26).

At about 10am, the 17-year-old inmate suddenly turned emotional and hit her head against the door frame of a toilet in the laundry workshop. Officers at the scene immediately stopped her from further hurting herself.

The inmate sustained minor injury and was conscious at the time. She was sent to the centre hospital for treatment and received psychological counselling later.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The inmate was sentenced to jail for the offence of soliciting for immoral purpose.
