Correctional officers stop person in custody from committing self-harm

Correctional Services officers stopped a person in custody from hurting himself in Hei Ling Chau Addiction Treatment Centre today (February 16).

The officer found the 29-year-old male person in custody suddenly turned emotional at the centre's hospital at about 11.10am. He hit his head against a wall in the ward. Officers at the scene immediately stopped him from further harming himself.

The person in custody sustained minor head injury but was conscious at the time. After examination and treatment by a centre medical officer, he was transferred to a public hospital and later admitted for further medical examination. A departmental clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The person in custody had been recalled to the Addiction Treatment Centre for further treatment for breach of Supervision Order.
