Correctional officers stop remand person in custody attempting suicide by hanging

Correctional officers stopped a remand person in custody attempting to hang herself in Lo Wu Correctional Institution yesterday (March 20).

At about 11.35pm, the 27-year-old female remand person in custody attempted to hang herself with a bed sheet tied onto the grille bar of the dormitory and was discovered by other cellmates. They stopped her and alerted staff.

She was conscious upon the arrival of reinforcement. She was sent to the centre hospital for examination and subsequently referred to a public hospital for further treatment. A clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The remand person in custody was remanded for the offence of trafficking in a dangerous drug.
