Correctional officers intercept smuggling of suspected dangerous drugs into reception centre

Correctional officers at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (March 31) successfully intercepted suspected dangerous drugs which were concealed inside the body of a male remand person in custody.

Upon admission to the institution on March 28, the 60-year-old male remand person in custody underwent X-ray body scanning and was suspected to have swallowed some drugs before admission. He was therefore put under close monitoring.

Until around 11.50am today, he discharged six pellets of suspected dangerous drugs wrapped in plastic sheet. The man was remanded for the offence of trafficking in dangerous drugs.

The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

A spokesperson for the department said, "The department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs or unauthorised articles into correctional institutions in order to maintain good order and discipline in a drug-free environment for all people in its custody."

There have been 37 seizures of dangerous drugs to date this year.
