Correctional officers stop remand person in custody from self-harm

     Correctional officers stopped a remand person in custody from hurting himself at Pik Uk Correctional Institution today (May 16).  
   
     At 7.53am, the 19-year-old male remand person in custody suddenly turned emotional during an interview with officers and hit his head against the wall. Officers at the scene immediately stopped him and arranged for him to go to the centre hospital for examination. While awaiting medical examination at centre hospital he turned emotional again, and again hit his head against the wall. He calmed down after being stopped by officers at the scene.  
   
     The remand person in custody was conscious at the time and suffered minor injuries to his head. He was treated at the centre hospital. A departmental clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.
   
     A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."   
 
     The remand person in custody was remanded for the offence of using a false instrument.
