Correctional officers intercept smuggling of suspected dangerous drugs at reception centre

Correctional officers at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (June 17) intercepted suspected dangerous drugs which were concealed inside the body of a remand person in custody.

Upon admission to the institution on June 13, the 54-year-old male remand person in custody underwent X-ray body scanning and was suspected to have swallowed some drugs. He was therefore closely monitored.

Until 10am today, he discharged five pellets of suspected dangerous drugs wrapped in plastic sheets. The man was remanded for the offence of trafficking in dangerous drugs.

The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

A spokesperson for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs or unauthorised articles into correctional institutions in order to maintain good order and discipline in a drug-free environment for all people in its custody."

There have been 50 seizures of dangerous drugs in correctional institutions to date this year.
