Correctional officers find person in custody committing self-harm

Correctional Services officers found a person in custody hurting herself in Nei Kwu Correctional Institution today (June 28).

At 11.30am, an officer found an injury mark on the left forearm of the 22-year-old female person in custody who had a record of committing self-harm.  Upon enquiry, she admitted that she had used a seam-ripper to hurt herself in the workshop.

The officer immediately took her to the centre hospital for medical treatment and examination. A department clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The person in custody was sentenced to imprisonment for an offence of possession of dangerous drugs.
