Correctional officers stop remand person in custody from hanging attempt

Correctional officers stopped a remand person in custody who attempted to hang himself in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre yesterday (July 7).

At 10.37pm, an on-duty officer found the 36-year-old male remand person in custody attempting to hang himself with a pair of pyjama trousers fixed onto the window frame of his cell. The officer called for reinforcement immediately.

The reinforcement staff, after arriving at the scene, controlled the remand person in custody. He was found conscious at the time. After preliminary medical examination, he was transferred to a public hospital for further treatment.

A clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

He was remanded for an offence of possession of dangerous drugs.
