Correctional officers stop person in custody from self-harm

Correctional Officers stopped a person in custody from committing self-harm at Lai King Correctional Institution today (August 4).

At 3.30pm, the 18-year-old female person in custody turned emotionally unstable after an argument with another person in custody in laundry workshop and used a pencil to scratch her neck. The officers at the scene immediately stopped her and sent her to the centre hospital for medical examination. She sustained minor injuries on her neck and was admitted to the centre hospital for close observation after treatment. A clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The female person in custody was convicted of an offence of trafficking in dangerous drugs.
