Correctional officers stop person in custody assaulting staff

Correctional officers stopped a person in custody assaulting staff yesterday (April 20).

The 45-year-old foreign male person in custody was discharged from Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre yesterday after serving his imprisonment. As his case needed to be further processed by the Immigration Department, the man was escorted to the Castle Peak Bay Immigration Centre by correctional officers. At about 9am, while undergoing the handover procedures at the Immigration Centre, the man suddenly pushed a correctional officer from behind and caused the latter to fall to the ground. Other officers at the scene immediately subdued him.

During the incident, two officers sustained minor injuries and both of them were discharged after treatment at a public hospital.

The case has been reported to the Police for follow-up action.

The person in custody was convicted for the offence of theft.
