Correctional officers find person in custody committing self-harm

Correctional Services officers at Stanley Prison yesterday (May 14) found a male person in custody using fragments of a plastic spectacles lens to hurt himself.

At 9.30pm, an officer found the 34-year-old person in custody with injury marks to both wrists in an observation ward of the centre hospital. After investigation, it was discovered that he had broken the spectacles in the ward and used the plastic lens fragments to hurt himself.

After consultation with a medical officer at the centre hospital, the person in custody was transferred to a public hospital for further treatment. The case will be followed up by a clinical psychologist of the department.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The person in custody was sentenced to imprisonment for a theft offence.
