Correctional officers find person in custody committing self-harm

Correctional Services officers at High Court Cell Holding Unit today (June 4) found a female person in custody using fragments of a plastic spectacles lens to hurt herself.

At 1.10pm, an officer found the 41-year-old person in custody with injury marks to left wrist inside the cell. After investigation, it was discovered that she had broken the spectacles in the cell earlier and used the plastic lens fragments to hurt herself.

After initial treatment, the person in custody was transferred to a public hospital for further treatment. The case will be followed up by a clinical psychologist of the department.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The person in custody was sentenced to imprisonment for the offence of fraud.
