Nineteen persons in custody were presented with certificates for vocational training courses including Bar Bending and Fixing Skill, Intermediate Trade Test - Concreter, Forklift Truck Operator, and Overhead Crane Operator at Tai Lam Correctional Institution (TLCI) today (Jun 30) in recognition of their efforts towards reintegrating into society after their release.
Officiating at the presentation ceremony, the Chairman of the District Fight Crime Committee (Islands District), Mr Yu Hon-kwan, agreed that a job opportunity was of vital importance to the smooth reintegration of former persons in custody into the community. He said he appreciated the efforts of the CSD in providing market-oriented vocational training courses under the Construction Industry Council and other training agencies, especially in view of the training needs of the construction and logistics industries. Such an arrangement can help persons in custody to look for promising employment opportunities after their release, and also train up new entrants for the industries concerned.
He also encouraged graduates to grasp the chance to train for their own future and look for relevant jobs after release, which would also help to contribute to the development of Hong Kong, he said.
Among the graduates is Ah Yan (false name), who will be released this year. He completed the Bar Bending and Fixing Skill Course and received the course certificate. He said that trainees have learnt from the variety of vocational training courses available to them as part of the CSD’s rehabilitation work. In addition, the CSD hosted a career talk by inviting a council member of the Hong Kong Construction Association to talk to trainees about the current situation and career prospect of the construction industry. Ah Yan said that their confidence in working in the construction industry had been enhanced by the courses as well as support from the community. He said he would try to find a job in the construction sector and earn a living for himself.
The CSD offers more than 30 market-oriented vocational training courses to adult persons in custody covering construction, engineering, catering, retail, commerce, tourism, beauty, logistics, laundry services, information technology, environmental services, health care and transport to enhance their professional skills.
