Correctional officers find person in custody committing self-harm

Correctional Services officers found a male person in custody sustained wounds on his right front arm in a ward of the centre hospital of Hei Ling Chau Correctional Institution at 2.10pm today (September 17).

After investigation, it was found that he had used a ball pen to hurt himself in the ward at earlier time.

After treatment given by the medical officer at the centre hospital, the person in custody was transferred to a public hospital for further treatment. A clinical psychologist of the department will follow up the case.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."
