Remand person in custody attacks correctional staff at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre

A 36-year-old male remand person in custody attacked a correctional officer at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre yesterday (November 4).

At 11.50am, the remand person in custody quarrelled with a 24-year-old male remand person in custody inside a dayroom. Staff at the scene called for reinforcements and separated them at once. The reinforcement staff arrived and escorted the 36-year-old remand person in custody away from the scene. On the way, he suddenly became emotional and attacked a correctional officer. Staff at the scene stopped him and subdued the assailant by using OC foam.

During the incident, a correctional officer and two remand persons in custody sustained minor injuries. After examination by a medical officer at the centre hospital, the officer and the assailant were sent to a public hospital for further treatment. The other remand person in custody did not need to be transferred to a public hospital after receiving treatment at the centre hospital.

The assault case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

The assailant has a long history of drug abuse and was remanded for the offence of forcible taking or detention of a person.
