Person in custody dies in public hospital

     A sick 83-year-old male person in custody at Stanley Prison died in a public hospital today (January 31).

     The person in custody was sentenced for the offence of "Possession of goods to which Dutiable Commodities Ordinance applies" on January 12. He suffered from chronic diseases including hypertension and has a history of cerebral vascular accident and was arranged to admit to the centre hospital for medical care and follow-up. He was sent to a public hospital for treatment on January 30 because of gastrointestinal discomfort. During hospitalisation, his condition deteriorated and he was certified dead at 11.22am today.

     The Correctional Services Department has reported the case to the Police. A death inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.
