Remand person in custody attacks correctional staff at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre

A 30-year-old male remand person in custody attacked a correctional officer at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre yesterday (February 9).

At 4.21pm, the remand person in custody suddenly became emotional and spat at a correctional officer inside a dayroom. Staff called for reinforcement immediately. The assailant was escorted away after reinforcement staff arrived at scene.

During investigation, the assailant attempted to attack the correctional officers again. The staff at scene stopped him. Since the assailant was emotionally unstable and intended to continue his attack, OC foam was used to subdue him after warnings given were in vain.

The correctional officers were in satisfactory condition after examination and treatment provided by the doctor at the centre hospital. The assailant was sent to a public hospital for further examination because of his unstable emotion.

Correctional Services Department has referred the incident to the Police for investigation.

The person in custody has a long history of drug abuse and was remanded for the offence of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
