Remand person in custody attacks correctional staff at Pik Uk Correctional Institution

A 17 year-old male remand person in custody attacked a correctional officer at Pik Uk Correctional Institution this morning (July 21).

During a medical examination at the centre hospital at 8.20am, the remand person in custody suddenly turned emotional and punched one of the officers. The officers at the scene immediately stopped him. OC foam was used to further subdue the remand person in custody after warnings were given in vain.

During the incident, one correctional officer and the assailant sustained minor injuries. After examination and treatment provided by the medical officer at the centre hospital, the correctional officer was referred to a public hospital for further treatment. The assailant was in a satisfactory condition and did not need to be referred to an outside hospital. A clinical psychologist of the department will follow up on the case.

The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

The assailant has a history of mental illness and was remanded for the offence of making explosives with intent to endanger life or property.
