Correctional Officers stop remand person in custody attacking staff

Correctional officers of Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre stopped a remand person in custody attacking officers this evening (January 19).

At 6.32pm, the 35-year-old male remand person in custody suddenly turned emotional in his cell and hurled a plastic stool at a correctional officer. The officer immediately shouted to stop the assailant and called for reinforcement to escort him to the institution hospital for medical examination. On the way, the assailant turned emotional again and attempted to launch further attack. Officers at scene immediately stopped him. OC foam was used to subdue the person in custody after warnings were given in vain.

The correctional officer sustained injury to abdomen whilst the assailant sustained injuries to face, shoulder and arm. After examination and treatment provided by the medical officer at the institution hospital, the officer was referred to a public hospital for further treatment while the assailant did not need to be sent to public hospital.

The Correctional Services Department has referred the incident to the Police for investigation.

The assailant was remanded for the offence of trafficking in a dangerous drug.
