Correctional Services Department combats illicit activities

     The Correctional Services Department (CSD) today (February 3) launched an operation at Tung Tau Correctional Institution to combat illicit activities of persons in custody.

     At 12.30pm today, 17 male persons in custody of other nationalities staged a hunger strike inside dining hall. According to intelligence, some persons in custody who had been placed on disciplinary report earlier incite fellow persons in custody to engage in collective illicit activities with a view to acting against the institution management.

     Following assessment and detailed planning, the CSD deployed Regional Response Team and other reinforcements to Tung Tau Correctional Institution the same day to search targets and various locations.

     During the incident, two persons in custody of other nationalities suspected of inciting fellow persons in custody to engage in collective illicit activities are being removed from association and put under investigation. The present atmosphere at Tung Tau Correctional Institution is stable. The CSD will continue to closely monitor the development and the persons in custody concerned.

     In order to assist persons in custody to rehabilitate in a safe and orderly environment, the CSD spares no effort in combating illicit activities of all kinds in its institutions.

     Tung Tau Correctional Institution is a minimum security prison for the detention of male adult persons in custody.
