Correctional officers stop remand person in custody attacking staff

Correctional officers of Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre stopped a remand person in custody attacking an officer this morning (March 6).

At 9.39am, the 37-year-old male remand person in custody suddenly turned emotional and attacked a correctional officer with his hand in a dayroom. Officers at the scene immediately stopped him and called for reinforcements. On the way to the Special Unit for segregation, the assailant turned emotional again and attempted to launch a further attack. Officers at the scene immediately stopped him. OC foam was used to subdue the person in custody after warnings were given in vain.

The correctional officer sustained injury to his chest whilst the assailant sustained injuries to his face during the incident. After examination and treatment provided by the medical officer at the institution hospital, the officer was referred to a public hospital for further treatment while the assailant did not need to be sent to a public hospital.

The Correctional Services Department has referred the incident to the Police for investigation.
