Unconscious remand person in custody dies in hospital

     A 49-year-old female remand person in custody who was found unconscious in Tai Lam Centre for Women died in a public hospital today (June 11).

     ​The person in custody, who had a drug abuse history of more than 20 years, was remanded for the offence of theft in the afternoon yesterday. She was arranged to receive medical observation and treatment in the institution hospital due to withdrawal symptom of drug abuse. At 3.05am today, the remand person in custody suddenly felt physical discomfort. Her conditions deteriorated and she was found unconscious during the course of medical examination provided by a correctional officer. First aid treatment was applied immediately and an ambulance was called to send her to a public hospital. She was certified dead at 5.16am today.

     The case has been reported to the Police. A death inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.
